Wendy Seller

Michael Freed

The house form is an image that has occurred in my work for years. All of my houses are personified. I see them as portraits.

My first houses with roots served as symbols of house/home. My paintings were introspective and personal, observant of the comforting and whimsical ìnearî world around me. On occasion my houses are replaced by figures.

I find myself also drawn toward forms that move ñ subjects found in nature that twist, snarl, expand, compress, release or contain. Moving fish, snarling branches, twisting tree limbs, floating leaves, or metamorphosed objects from the artistís studio support the narrations in many of my paintings. These images protect, encompass, consume or threaten my houses.

Recent paintings have become reactive and proactive to a less sheltered, not-so-distant world. The 24/7 news coverage of our time has forced me to confront life in a new way. My vision combines the reality of the dark and optimism of the light through a juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated subjects.

My houses often segregate the inside world from the outside world. Images that in reality are found outside the house or above ground may instead appear in my paintings inside the house, under water or beneath the ground.

As a distraction from the dark realities of world news, I began my "junk food" series. These tongue-in-cheek paintings reflect my aversion to unhealthy products in an educated health-conscious society.
