| Roger Reutimann |
Bio Roger Reutimann was born and raised in Switzerland where he demonstrated a strong affinity toward the arts at a very early age. At age 5, he started piano lessons and went on to study piano years later at the conservatoriums in Zurich and Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Rogerís interests in the arts have always been manifold. In addition to music and drawing, painting and design also became strong passions from child-hood to today. Other than attending a few semesters at the Art Institute of Zurich, he is largely a self-taught painter, nurturing and refining his talent and technique with great fervor. Roger is also a classically trained chef and has a degree from the Culinary Institute of Zurich. From 1987 until 1992 Roger managed/operated the Zurich based art fair company FORUM. From 1992 until 1996 Roger designed and marketed his own line of light fixtures in Europe and won several Roger has worked with a variety of materials and mediums; stained glass, marble, ornamental plaster, wood and of course oil on canvas. Since 1998 he has dedicated himself to creating a body of work that reflects his desire to communicate a spiritual message while celebrating the beauty of the human form. 1996 Roger has moved to the US. Until 2004 his work has only been available as original and published works in Europe. Statement Roger Reutimann works and lives in Miami Beach, Florida. His studio reflects the traditional character of the late Italian Renaissance, which is an important influence in the creation of his work. A great deal of Roger's art inspiration is derived from playing classical piano. Classical music helps to surround him, both internally and externally, with a creative environment where his imagination can flourish. Each new painting begins with an idea that gradually develops into a concept. He then spends a great deal of time researching, sketching and building up these concepts. In addition to the visual celebration of the human form, Roger's paintings also hold a profound meaning and spiritual message, which guides his every stroke of the brush. Roger paints from live models as well as reference photographs, which he takes in his photo studio. Live models are again used in final sittings for finishing touches. Technique Roger Reutimann paints in oil on canvas. His painting technique is based on the traditions developed by the original Italian and Dutch masters. He begins with the preparation of stretched linen with multiple layers of toned gesso. This gives the canvas an absorbent and smooth base with sufficient ìtoothî to hold the oil paint. Roger begins the first sitting with an under painting, traditionally monochromatic, which lays down the forms, planes and light values. With a second transparent layer, the under painting is refined with added details. After a sufficient number of days when the under-painting is completely dry, Roger then starts building up the colors in 30 or more layers of transparent oil paints, each one thin enough to still show the previous ones underneath. These layers consist of oil pigments, which are mixed with a painting medium, a blend of distillates, oils, and solvents that increase the flow and transparency of the paint. This labor-intensive layering technique results in a stunning three-dimensional effect with unique luminosity. |
